The objective of Zuma is to eliminate all the balls rolling along a visible path before they reach the yellow skull structure. This path is clear in all levels except for the final one, where it becomes more challenging. The skull opens slightly as a warning of oncoming balls, signaling danger. Players can carry two balls at a time and switch between them freely.

When a ball reaches the skull, the others follow, and the stone frog idol spins rapidly before disappearing. This causes the player to lose a life. To prevent this, players must fire colored balls from the stone frog idol's mouth to match and eliminate balls in the chain. The chain continues to move forward until the player fills the yellow bar, which stops new balls from appearing and eases the challenge.

If three or more balls of the same color touch, they explode. These explosions can trigger chain reactions, clearing large sections. The level is completed when, after filling the bar, the player eliminates all remaining balls on the screen, achieving victory.

Players can earn bonuses by collecting coins, often through gaps in the chain. Bonuses are also awarded for causing explosions through gaps and maintaining a streak of consecutive explosions (chain bonuses). Time bonuses are given for completing levels within "ace time," which varies between 30 seconds and 4 minutes depending on the level.

There are four types of power-ups in the game. These power-ups activate when the corresponding ball is exploded:

Backwards Ball: Pushes the furthest chain backward for a short distance, creating a brief respite.
Slow-Down Ball: Temporarily slows the speed of the chain, giving more control.
Accuracy Ball: Allows quicker shots and shows an arrow for better aiming. This lasts for a similar duration as the slow-down ball.
Explosion Ball: Explodes all balls in a small radius, effectively clearing difficult clusters.
Power-up balls revert to regular balls if not activated quickly. Timing and strategy are crucial for success.
